For Protos, its origins are everything. Born in Peñafiel in 1927, decades before Ribera del Duero was recognised as a denomination of origin and guided by an innate avant-garde spirit, Protos is the creation of 11 visionaries who carried the Ribera Duero brand from the beginning, certain of the importance that this origin would have in the world of wine. And they were right...as in 1982 the DO is created and Protos altruistically cedes the use of its brand ‘Ribera del Duero’. Winners of the first prize at the international exhibition in Barcelona In 1929 with its 1927 and 1928 vintages, always committed to the continuous improvement of the region and its people, innovation and sustainability, Protos is today an internationally renowned winery that perseveres in respecting and enhancing the legacy left by those 11 founders, grandparents of several members of the current board of directors.

This family heritage, together with the constant search for differentiation and sustainability as a priority in all its processes, has been passed down from generation to generation to the present day under the slogan ‘Ser Primero’(To Be First).

Since 2008, Protos has had a state of the art winery, culmination of the arquitectura de vanguardia, diseñada por el célebre arquitecto Premio Pritzker  Richard Rogers, making your wine tourism experience a journey back in time that also includes its historic underground galleries excavated under the famous medieval castle of Peñafiel. This winery, designed by Richard Rogers, was awarded the prestigious‘Civic Trust Awards‘ in 2010, and was Sterling Prize finalist, in 2009.

Today, Protos has transferred its almost century-old know-how to make its wines. whites in the Rueda DO and its rosés in the Cigales DO. There are more than half a thousand families who live directly and indirectly from the work of Protos, families of winegrowers, most of whom have a link with the winery of more than 70 years.

Since 2022, Protos is on the list of the 50 most admired wineries in the world by the prestigious international organisation Drinks International.
